Friday Q&A with a Bali resident. Scott Pullen

This week with … Scott Pullen

Scott speaks with Esteh

The basics.

Where are you from and how long you been in Bali?

Tibubeneng via Sydney.  7 years & too many traffic jams.

Single or hooked up?
Married to my music

How did you first get into electronic music? Like, was there a certain moment it all made sense?

I’ve been into electronic music since early electronic music began. Kraftwerk, New Order, Depeche Mode, Yello & of course, the rise of house music. I was a regular DJ at Sydney’s famous RAT Parties back in the day.

Who is your greatest influence in DJing or electronic music?

Way too many influences to list, but everyone from Masters At Work & St. Germain to Keinemusik & Maz. I’m really loving the music of Oliver Koletzki, Adam Ten, Bontan & Maz at the moment.

What do you think makes electronic music so good?

The sense of being on the dance floor, not being self-conscious & feeling anonymous. From that sense of anonymity, vulnerability & abandon, we feel like one with everybody on the dance floor. It’s a unifying experience, being completely lost in the moment with everyone.

Do you produce music?

Yes, I’ve been producing music for 4 years now. I’ve just released ‘La Cuba’ (Scott Pullen Remix) – Pippi Ciez, a melodic Afro house track called ‘Whispers of the Ancestors’ & I have a new Brazilian style track influenced by the likes of Maz & Antdot called ‘Cançāo da Esperança’ dropping on 25th April on YHV Records. And that, I can’t wait for you to hear!

How many tracks have you now released and what effect has that experience had on your musical journey?

Cançāo da Esperança will be my 13th original release & with ‘La Cuba’ (Scott Pullen Remix) – Pippi Ciez is 14th. My music continues to evolve & I’m influenced by new sounds & other producers. I’m currently working on a dark, melodic, moody track that is quite orchestral & operatic.

It’s great to be booked as an international artist in other countries & move beyond the Bali circuit. I’m now reaching around 45,000 monthly listeners on Spotify in 184 countries around the world.

How long have you been a DJ and how would you describe your music you make or play?

I have been a DJ all my adult life (do the math, it’s decades). The music I play is deep, melodic, often with many cultural influences & always makes you feel something – from melancholy to euphoric & everything in between. Music that not only moves your body, but your mind & soul!

What’s your favourite area in Bali to hang out (day-time)?

I love the valleys in Sideman & scuba diving at Amed.

What’s your favourite place in Bali at night (where you don’t work)?

My studio (but I work there) & my bed.

What do you do in your spare time? Any other interests?

I like riding around Bali & discovering new places, but I don’t do it as much as I’d like to. I play padel twice a week with friends & I recently started scuba diving.

Where are you a resident, or regular DJ?

Soekoe at Red Ruby, Ulu Cliffhouse, Cretya, Adriana Rooftop, Caravan, Moyo at Tabu & Catch Beach Club (Phuket)
