This weekend it is the 22nd anniversary of the first Bali Bomb. This year it is actually the same day and date as the original; Saturday, 12 October. For many people living on the island now most probably there is little connection with that date, just another day on the calendar, and with so many bombs being dropped around the world since then we’ve all become so much more numb to the tragedy of these occurrences. However, when I see that day and date memories do come flooding back again. It was a terrible night where many people lost their lives and the footloose, casual Bali definitely lost its innocence. In the bigger picture, that day also helped to create the so called ‘coalition of the willing’, which came together to invade Iraq in 2003, and as we are reminded almost every day, the world is still reeling from the ramifications of that operation. War is a terrible thing. Let’s never forget that. Let’s never forget that it is the innocent people that suffer most and war should be averted at all cost. I think we should always remind ourselves of that fact, and especially right now. Lest we forget.
Meanwhile, I didn’t go out much last week besides dropping into the Oktobeer Fest at South East Brewing Co in Kerobokan. What a fun time (pictured above), and the event lived up to expectations? Loads of local craft beers to choose from (many I had never heard of before), great music and being with some old friends also made it that much more enjoyable.
This weekend will be a little more hectic, though. The big events this weekend are down to the Ulu Cliffhouse 7th Anniversary with Sychronised Swimming from the USA on Friday and back in town on Saturday for the show at Red Ruby, UBBAH (SPAIN), as my friend Dante would say, all for the love of melodic techno. See you there!
