Editorial. This week in Bali.

Today is a special date for me. August 8, 1988 was the day I started my first business, something called Bathwood. That makes it 36 years since I have worked for anyone. Now, how about that! Anyways, let’s get back to Bali and now!

The question begs, has Bali High Season lost its shine? The middle of August should be the busiest time on the island, but when I look at the calendar for around the Hari Merdeka, or Independence Day holiday (Aug 17), it would seem there is not much on. In years gone by, that was the week, or at least weekend, where special and massive events were on all over town; on the beaches, in parks, on the streets, just about anywhere one could fit a party. But this year, and let me add, at this stage, there only appears to be the Ku White Party on Saturday August 17. It’s still early and no doubt there will be more announcements soon, but for now that is it.   What reason do you think this is? Let us know in the comments below.

I suppose you better get your tix to the White Party ASAP!  No kidding. And check thebeatbali.com regularly to find out what is announced this week.

Last Friday night we had the pleasure of joining the Summer Beer Fest right in the heart of Kuta at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. With loads of beers on tap and delicious food on the buffet we were well feasted. The drag and fire shows kept the in-house and walk-in punters well entertained. It was great to see a bit of life coming back to central Kuta. Yes sir.

Next evening we made our way to central Denpasar to check what was happening at Akasaka, which recently re-opened after a number of years being shut down. We had had a couple of drinks at Sardine which was firing up but we thought trying something different was a good option and we hadn’t been into central Denpasar on a Saturday night for I don’t know how long.  Akasaka consisted of two clubs and karaoke rooms before, and was quite notorious for many reasons, but it was a pumping nightlife spot for mainly locals or stray bule on a night out. Something like us on this night! Unfortunately, we discovered that there are only the karaoke rooms open for the moment, no club spaces to be seen. Our guest relations lady, Rachel, who showed us around, pointed out that the old Akasaka hall will be re-opening soon, but not yet. We had a drink at the well-appointed main reception bar area before heading back to the west side of town. And that was to Red Ruby and the visiting Swedish DJ, Christian Smith from Tronic Records. Tronic Records has been a main label of techno music for many years. He quickly summed things up and I must say he really nailed it with a mix of popular oldie classics morphing into banging techno tracks. Done like a real seasoned pro, and kept the crowd on side. We too were well-seasoned and crisply baked by that point. Another grand night in Seminyak.

When it comes to promotion, The Beat’s forte, of course, is the website. That is where we list the big events and the regular daily shows. Instagram is a bit hit and miss; but the website is where to find out what is going on every day on this island.  And BTW, you are already on it!

Check the Events pages above for what’s on this weekend.

Want to be kept up-to-date with what is going on around Bali? We send out The Beat Update email every week. If you would like to receive all the events info for the next week and other stories, straight to your mailbox please sign up here.
