It looks like the dry season has arrived already. Trade winds have kicked in and blue skies are back. Of course, it could turn around again at any moment, but since we are now in March, albeit early March, we could say, we are past the worse of the wet season, in any case. Enjoy! That was one very wet rainy season.
Last week, I was over at Dethu’s birthday in the Renon area, East Denpasar, at the bar he runs, RTB and supposed to have been DJing a rock set in honour of the rock man himself. Dethu is one of the shining lights of the Bali rock and punk scene, an accomplished journalist of the genre, and previous manager of Superman is Dead (that’s when I first met him some 25 years ago), and still is managing bands around town, but beyond all that he was also an integral part of The Beat magazine in its heyday, too. Strangely enough, or maybe better said, naturally enough, he has now turned into a DJ himself known for playing some classic New Wave tracks from the 80’s. So, I was all set to get it on with my rock set, but I was sabotaged by modern technology and a set of decks that more or less had everything (all settings) upside down―I won’t mention the brand, but it was not Pioneer. After messing things right up I believe I was asked to get off the decks by the birthday man himself. Really quite ignoble, but I hope to have the chance again on some decent decks in the near future. Let’s hope they will invite me back! In any case, it was a wonderful night in East Denpasar, even though being a little hot.
Back in Sanur last Sunday afternoon we stopped into a famous warung appropriately called Warung Kecil on Jalan Duyung, which my friend Sarah and everyone else worth their salt on the island had been going to for years, but for me the first time. It amazes me how any other resto of that tiny size anywhere else on the island would have zero people inside, but lo and behold, this one was standing room only. The food was pretty good, basic Indonesian fare, and it must be said the place did have a certain ’cool’ about it. We were also strolling along the Sanur promenade visiting Soul on the Beach, which used to be called something else back in the day, which we frequented quite often, and continues being a great spot for a snack, drink or dip in the ocean. That entire promenade on Sanur Beach is so relaxing and really so much more to offer than most other places on the island―no matter what anyone says.
