I’ve had a hectic week fighting the dreaded flu for most of it, and must say, it has been a pretty tough variant, as tough as anything Covid sent my way over the years. But before that arrived we were on the move as usual.
Friday kicked off at Café Del Mar with a few buddies enjoying the afternoon sun and a few vodka sodas tuned into the banging sunset tunes – a la Finns style. I don’t think banging music is totally appropriate with a sparse crowd laying around on daybeds trying to have a chat with their friends. Fair enough if there are a hundreds of people dancing around with a festival atmosphere, but if not, probably better to just put the chill out on, right? Well, I suppose there is the memo from management for the DJs to follow, but aren’t they supposed to be reading the crowd. Hey, but it’s all good. We had a good time, of course.
Already kindling the fire, we moved off to Sophie Digby and Caroline Usher’s new venture in Kerobokan, East West Palms where they have created a space to display their designer furniture, other home wares, wines and other top quality products. The store/gallery/event space is delberately designed like a person’s home with kitchen, dining and living room areas with an outdoor function space on one side and large beautiful window aspect on the other overlooking the rice fields. “This is a place where people developing a new villa, for example can come and experience and live the quality designs on offer. They can discuss their ideas with our designers and execute the design they desire. While they are at it they can enjoy one of the better wines on the island,” Sophie told me. And that’s more or less what we did, another wine vicar? It truly is a wonderful, quirky, fun, but seriously interesting place. With the right budget one could furnish their dream home quite easily at East West Palms. (for more details) WA: 085299856668
Next stop was Nuanu City and the Labyrinth. Friday night was the launch of their LP Club, which will be a monthly show in the Dome. If you haven’t seen or heard of the Dome it is a planetarium style illuminated sphere, which for this occasion was afire with geometric designs accompanying the electronic music played on vinyl. This was all very impressive, but it would seem to be more a visual spectacle than real clubbing. I’m sure there are many people who would enjoy that kind of spectacle and there were maybe 100 that had taken the trip out. Call me old fashioned, but I still like my clubbing dark and rather chilly. They also have what’s called the Mystic Bali show in the Dome that depicts Balinese history and culture which I am told is well worth the visit and getting busier every day. More details here.
So after that I was back on the Gmax of my new found Russian buddy, Maxim, flying all the back to town. Not for the light hearted, but fortunately, we made it!
