What a memorable Friday night I had last week. You may recall me sprouting on about the worth of a live music event in someone’s front room in the last editorial. Well, I surely had to eat my words as the event was one of the highlights of recent times.
A collection of musicians that have been at the top of the game in the Bali live music scene for many years played an intimate live performance in the living room of a wonderful, traditional style home in Padang Galak, Sanur last Friday night. The house is owned by a singer from Jakarta, Sandrina, who moved to Bali a few years ago. She graciously invited everyone into her front room for the event.
Furnished With Sound, which has held a few similar events in Bali and around the world, had a new home for the evening.
The room had exquisite acoustics, the performers played their hearts out and the audience loved every moment of the evening. I had already had a ball on the way over from Canggu, even with it taking over two hours with some terrible Friday night traffic. My travelling companion, Ms M and I had such fun and so many laughs delving into old music on the car stereo and old stories from bygone years. After the Padang Galak show, the trip home was also reaching new levels of party frenzy with a quick drive-by stop-off in a couple of Kuta’s greater nightlife spots. Somehow we made it back to Canggu in one piece to fight another day. What a blast, but sometimes it would be handy to find the off button somewhere!

Next day was Saturday. It was a slow start, but a quick half ibuprofen always helps to get the brain back on a level footing. Actually, I was running around a bit during the day, but managed to get to the soft opening of Soi Cowboy and Maha Resort in Batu Mejan by a timely hour. There was a massive free flow of booze going on when we arrived at Maha and an equally massive crowd in attendance. All the UK geezers were there, of course, plus a whole lot more. Ian Charles was the centre of attention and he was obviously proud to have the place open and firing up before his eyes. I know a lot of work went into the making of both Maha and Soi Cowboy over the past almost year, so, well done, old buddy.
After a few opening speeches it was time to move into the new Soi Cowboy, which is the main, underground club room back towards the street. Just like its namesake in Bangkok there is plenty of neon, and plenty of… you guessed it, girls. Girls dancing in cages, on platforms, on tables, it was really going quite mad. The party sounds went on till late and the place was christened in great style.
Next they will open a sports bar and private rooms upstairs facing the street, which they say is coming soon. It is sure to be the place to get your fill of footy or other sports over the next few months. Soi Cowboy opens for real this weekend.
So, the weather was looking a lot better during the last week, besides a small anomaly last night where it bucketed down all over south Bali. It still is the wet season, there is no denying that. Checking the weather on the phone, it says there will be some showers over the next few days but after that looking clear. Let’s hope so anyway.

Have a good weekend you all!
