Editorial. This week in Bali.

Last Saturday I was out already, full of anticipation, when I received a message from Lukas at Red Ruby asking if I wanted to interview the main act at his club that night, UBBAH. I thought yeah, let’s do it, but the DJ producer well known for his banging Afterlife style tracks wasn’t going to start till 3am. Ok, we are in for a big one, I thought and arranged to meet up with some clubbing buddies for a pre drink and catch up before heading over to the home of techno and house. The nightlife is a crazy beast, there is no doubting that. But there is something special in going out into the middle of the night, passing through the empty streets, across town to weird and wonderful places full of light and warmth. The excitement builds as you arrive out the front, parking or getting off the Gojek, with the regulars milling about around the entrance doing what they do most nights of the week. They could be trying to enter, they could be trying to sell you something, who knows what they are doing as there’s no real PC in this part of the world. Some belong and some don’t. Tonight I belonged and we were on fire. The chat with UBBAH is posted inside.

Things to watch out for this week. Strangely enough, Halloween kicks off tonight at Hatch, so if anyone feels like going for the prizes and a bit of hip hop with B455 it is the place to be.  There are plenty of Halloween gigs coming up over the next two weeks. Check inside for the full round up on that, and more about Halloween next week. For those looking for something quieter, more relaxed (I guess), and definitely safer, you could try the W’s Silent Disco, also on tonight and always busy. Next weekend, watch out for the Foster the People (DJ set) show which promises to be a fun night out – even without the guitars.

I would like to offer my condolences to family and friends of Yann Alain Mandigou who recently passed away after a fight with cancer. He was well known and liked around town consulting on many restaurants and working in the promotion world over the past 16 years he was on the island. May he rest in peace.
