Editorial. This week in Bali

Last night we were invited down to try the new Thursday night event at Miss Fish, Yokai. The name YOKAI means something along the lines of supernatural spirits in Japanese folklore and there appeared to be plenty of that about. The night is curated by DJ Mofu, who was behind the decks for most of the night, and blasting out an awesome mix of Afro to house bangers, with help from the dancers, the acrobats and even some snake action. It was the launch and it was busy. The crowd down at Miss Fish is always a little bit fancier than just about anywhere in town, and with no exception last night. Yokai looks set to take over Thursday nights in Berawa. The night went on till late and somehow I managed to get this text out on time!

Meanwhile, I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t believe how messed up my time has become with the phone lately. It’s so easy to get lost down the rabbit hole on the thing, losing precious time, and totally consumed by the algorithm. I really dislike the way the machine is taking over. Obviously, and reluctantly, the phone is now a big part of my work, and probably yours, too. And while they call it social media, in fact, I would have to say it’s the opposite, antisocial. There was a time when people had to get out of their house and actually be sociable to make and keep friends. Not just sit on the sofa at home, death scrolling through Instagram and making believe they have real friends – thousands of them. The smart phone, social media and the dating apps have been the great downfalls of nightlife in general and probably humanity overall, in the past ten years. No wonder mental illness is on the increase, but what can one do? Can you imagine what it’ll be like in ten years from now? Ohh my goodness. I would love to take a break, leave the phone at home and run through the forest (possibly naked), staying in a wooden cabin for a week without any contact with the outside world. I’m ready, let’s go.

But before that happens, this weekend is looking rather large around the traps. Look out tonight for the new Friday night show at Da Maria, Say Less, and Mauricio’s Sakuran at Miss Fish, and then Saturday, Bobby Suryadi at Sardine and Pavel Petrov at Red Ruby.

Have a good weekend you all!
