We are now deep into July. That means we are closing in fast on the Bali High Season. That’s the time tourism and the party season is in overdrive. However, July normally sees families visiting the island, not so many independent travelers. Really, it should be busier now than what it is and a few people have been mentioning it. Last weekend was by no means quiet, but could have done with a few more bods around. In reality, it was more like the middle of the wet season than high season. A taxi driver told me one night that there weren’t many late night fares during the past week, which is rare, and mainly families during the day going to Waterbom or somewhere. Indeed, it is school holidays this week in Oz and Indo. Another factor is the spreading of the crowd. There are so many new venues opening around the island, but they are spread from north to south and east to west all over southern Bali. One can’t even get out of the house most days with so much traffic everywhere, let alone to the other side of the island. Anyway, hold on to your collective hats, the High Season is on the way!
Speaking of hats, last week we were over at MadPeppers, or is that Mad Hatters, at Miss Fish and had a ball. That was after visiting Atlas Superclub’s Thursday night Melodic Techno night, Resurgence. I must say the sound was better than previous visits, they must have done something, but I don’t know whether it is a great idea giving away bottles and tables to the young kids. I presume they are doing that. It may fill up some space, and let’s face it, it is a big space, but the average age must be 21. Don’t call me old fashioned, or just old, but yeah, the kids would be better in the hip hop bar down the road – in my opinion.
So we went over to Miss Fish to check out the MP crowd. After I was given a hat to wear by the master of ceremonies, Clem it all became clear, I knew who I was after all this time. Ha. It’s amazing how much fun it is to wear a hat. It makes an incredible and instantaneous transformation of one’s personality and psych. You can become a different new person without any inhibitions in a flash! And the centre of attention. There must be some kind of psychological effect in play, and if not yet, there should be a study done on it to find out what is happening with that wear-a-hat concept. Anyway, as you can imagine I had a ball and so did everyone else in the place. I don’t many had hats on, though. The music was good – a back to back from Clem and Soulfunk, and we partied on like rock stars till late. That was the last MadPeppers at Miss Fish for a while. They are on at Jade this Saturday night.
One other thing occurred last weekend that stopped me in my tracks. I had forgotten how much fun it is to DJ and my dear friends Dante and Astrid invited me over to DJ at their mini party in Nusa Dua. So much fun! I will definitely have to get that going again soon.
Highlights this week around town? For me, it would be Sneaky Sound System at Mrs Sippy, Ed’s band playing at The Orchard, The Gitano show last time at Ulu Cliffhouse looked like fun, Escape at Tabu and Sunday at W Bali looks good with NYC artist JOPLYN will surely be a very special performace.
