Rumours

An absolute institution on Seminyak’s famous ‘Eat Street’, Rumours has been serving up top-notch eats and good times round the bar for over a decade.
The best thing about Rumours is that they keep things simple – a large choice of Western style dishes that won’t break the bank. The formula works too, there’s no need for reinventions and no fads, and yet Rumours packs ‘em in every night of the week. Open from 4pm ‘til 2am for late lunch and dinner, you’ve got a huge choice of tables throughout, with diner-style booths around one edge, a central bar and pool table for the sharks. Keeping the energy up is the stellar wait staff who work the room like a boss and even find time to put on random choreographed dance performances throughout the evening between the tables – usually to the beats of the nightly DJs who keep the beats flowing.
The Rumours menu hasn’t changed a great deal either, but that’s cool because A: it’s pretty much spot on, and B: it’s so massive you could eat here every day for months and never have to have the same thing twice. Wading straight into the thick of it, me and the Mrs. order up a couple of drinks in the form of a Green Menthe (35k+) and a Frozen Mango Daiquiri (75k+ – half price before 10pm!). The Green Menthe is a sweetly refreshing blend of coconut and mint, while the daiquiri is a fruity ice blend of fresh mango piled so high in the glass it seems to defy gravity, and means you have to get slurping as quick as possible.
Accompanying the drinks, we try out the Feta Salad (28k+) to get things rolling – the fresh mix of feta cheese, crunchy capsicum, mushrooms, tomatoes and shredded carrots is a total winner, particularly with the tangy dressing drizzled all over. Anyone who knows Rumours, also knows that ever since the beginning it’s been all about the steaks, and so for the mains, I check out the 180gr US Beef Tenderloin (120k+) with creamy potato gratin and gorgonzola sauce. It doesn’t disappoint – the super tender meat cuts like butter, while the rich cheesy sauce is the perfect accompaniment. The Mrs. goes for the Spaghetti AOP (37k+) – a spin on the classic aglio olio style, the Rumours version mixes in dried chili flakes and king mushrooms for an added flavour kick. For the sweet course, we split a homemade Blueberry Cheesecake (30k+) that perfectly rounds off a great feed.
You really cannot go wrong at this Eat Street favourite, especially when there are more specials here than you can shake a stick at – there are literally no hours that aren’t happy hours here. For late hours after 10pm there’s 50% selected whiskies and bourbons, big discounts on bottles also after 10pm like Finlandia, JD, JW and Black Royal. Wine lovers will love the nicely priced bottles of local and imported wines, while the special selection cocktails for just 45k+ should keep everyone happy.
