Ultimo – August 26, 2016

Ultimo has been serving up top-notch eats and good times round the bar for over a decade and is an absolute institution on Seminyak’s famous ‘Eat Street’.
One of the best things about Ultimo is that the concept is kept brilliantly simple – a large choice of Italian style dishes that won’t break the bank. The formula works too, as Ultimo packs ‘em in every night of the week, and has a great buzzing atmosphere. Open from 4pm ‘til 1am for late lunches and dinner, you’ve got a huge choice of where to sit throughout the smart interior, with big and small tables dotted around the central bar, and a number of indoor or alfresco areas.

The Ultimo menu hasn’t changed a great deal for as long as I can remember, but that’s cool because A: it’s pretty much spot on, and B: it’s so massive you could eat here every day for months and never have to eat the same thing twice. Wading straight into the thick of it, a friend and I order up a couple of drinks in the form of a bubbly Red Velvet (65k+) and a Frozen Mango Daiquiri (65k+ from one of the numerous special drink promo menu pages). The Red Velvet is very a grown-up blend of vodka, lime, grenadine and champers, while the daiquiri is a fun’n’fruity ice blend of fresh mango piled so high in the glass it seems to defy gravity, and means you have to get slurping as quick as possible.

Accompanying the drinks, I try out the Prosciutto Servito Con Melone Fresco (120k+) to get things rolling – the sublimely tender slices of flavoursome cured ham a total winner, particularly when paired with a bite of fresh melon. My friend plumps for the Spaghetti Alle Vongole, Gamberi e Capeante (80k/120k+ S/L) – better known in English as seafood pasta, which also goes down a treat.

Anyone who knows Ultimo also knows that ever since the beginning it’s been all about the steaks, and so for the mains, we check out the 250gr US Wagyu Tagliata de Manzo (185k+) with creamy potatoes and mixed veggies, and the Manzo Cotoletta (120k+) beef schnitzel in a foie gras sauce. Neither disappoints – the super tender meat cuts like butter, but for me it’s the rich sauce on the schnitzel that stands out the most. For the sweet course, we tuck into a classic Tiramisu (60k+), and a white chocolate Crème Brule (35k+) to perfectly round off a great feed.

You really cannot go wrong at this Eat Street favourite, especially when there are more promo specials here than you can shake a stick at: Beer lovers will rejoice for 50k+ Coronas or 15k+ Prosts, while Champagne fans have a choice of no less than four bubbly cocktails for just 65k+.
