Update on the Outage:
Everything is back to normal now on Saturday morning. I was down in Legian early evening. The power was on there, Jalan Dhyana Pura to be precise, but the rest of town I passed through on the bike from Kuta to Canggu was off. I wonder why it was on there. The power came back on in Canggu around 1.30am. Meanwhile, the party went on last night, and a bit more fervently than usual, in those venues with generators.
It’s all about the beats, man. And the beat keeps on rockin’ on!
Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was only one anniversary in a venue one time a year. Now it’s like there’s one every month. That’s the beauty of DJ collectives; not only do they bring their own extended fan base to the venue every week, but they also bring an extra anniversary party with them to the venue every year. They also have their own anniversary of initiation and then anniversaries in every venue they have a residency. So, the collective is having perhaps 4 or 5 anniversaries per year! I wouldn’t stand in the way of anyone having a good party and having a good time, no way. But it does show how nowadays the hype has grown into something even bigger than the reality. Check in the events pages for an anniversary near you this weekend!
Last week, we were at Ku De Ta for the opening of their latest art exhibition presented by Nyaman Gallery. They called it Soiree of Creativity and I was there mainly because my old buddy Dave Eagles, who was helping here 25 years ago at the beginning of this magazine, and was exhibiting some of his plene aire paintings with the other dozen or so artists. It’s always a good time at Ku and with a lot of other old friends attending it was a great evening in Seminyak. Check Nyaman Gallery when you get the chance, they have some very interesting art/stuff in there.
It was a hard slog last week with the amount of partying and drinking going on and since it is well known I cannot say no, an event also beckoned on Saturday night that I couldn’t really turn down. Since it was a bit of a blind date as far as the invite went – from a press agency – I didn’t really know what to expect and really had to push myself out the door into my gang to get myself in gear and enthusiastism rising for another outing. But I did, and must say it was a good decision. The bar opening was at Luma Bali restaurant on Jalan Batu Bolong and after walking in wondering who would be inside, I walked straight into some old friends and quickly met some new ones. The restaurant is owned by ex- Merah Putih chef/owner, Kieren Mortland and his old friend from London restaurant days and another chef, Cam Emirali. They have been caning it with their resto venture for the past year inside, but decided to get a bit of action happening out the front – street side. “There is a busy restaurant inside, but you wouldn’t know it if you were driving past. So, we decided to give the front here a lift, create a bar with a casual dining atmosphere right next to the street,” Kieren told The Beat. It has definitely achieved that – a buzz you can see from afar. Delecious canapes were washed down with spectacular cocktails in great old skool Bali opening fashion! Try Luma Bar and restaurant next time in Batu Bulong!
Photos above are from Ku DE Ta and Luma Bar, also down Batubelig and around Berawa.
