Breaking away from tradition and being unique are the trademarks of I Nyoman Ngendon, one of the major artists from the village of Batuan. He was a multi-talented artist and a freedom fighter; probably the first art entrepreneur in the 1930s. Meanwhile, I Wayan Taweng learned to paint primarily from I Nyoman Ngendon. He then began to teach his sons and neighbors, insisting his students discover their own vision. “Traces under the Surface” shows Taweng’s work, as well as the works by his three sons and grandson. All four artists have their own brand and personality which reflect Ngendon’s approach to art and to life; a devotion to freedom of expression in art.
