A collection of works by Naomi Samara is now at at Ghostbird + Swoon. Themed “Sex in the Garden”, the solo exhibition dissects beauty and desire, viewed by the artist as illusory characters that live within layers of changeable truths. “Sex in the Garden” was birthed through a realization that what she was attempting to find within is abundant in nature. Perishable flora display intricate structures and expose raw sexual vulnerability. She sees the drive of attraction as being displayed openly in flowers, making it the closest and most honest form of beauty. She allows foreign structures to organically transform through a series of uninhibited brush strokes that create figurative and abstract ‘beings’. The outcome does not portray an idealized beauty, but exposes the all-encompassing gravity of its search.
